The Christopher Kane sneaker has landed with three different styles, for both men and women, all crafted in Italy.A low top, brogue and high top version – all featuring an elastic cross-strap – are made of neoprene and come in signature lace print, tweeds and navy pony skin with neon accents and those all important safety-buckle straps.Well he was never going to launch with a lace-up, was he?We caught up with the designer to talk fashion, feet and fastenings…
1.Has designing a sneaker always been at the back of your mind or was it more of an eureka moment? This is something I"ve always wanted to work on, the nearest I got to a proper sneaker was in my SS12 collection with my pool slides.2.From where did the sneakers take their inspiration?I used my first collection SS07 for inspiration - I did the same when I launched my bags in AW14 - the two key components being the safety buckle and stretch elastic, I always use them and it made perfect sense.3.Do you think wearing sneakers changes the attitude of your clothes?I think so.If you pull on sneakers you are doing it for comfort and to have a nonchalant feeling about your look, or even better you are not thinking too much about how you look and it becomes natural.
4.What does the Christopher Kane woman look for in a sneaker?I wanted something classic and cool in style with a slight twist on the usual fastening.I was never going to launch with a lace up!I love the easiness to it; it"s like an adult version of a velcro kids sneaker. The best thing about them is that they are actually comfortable... and of course look good!
5.Did the process present any new challenges for you?I have to say making a sneaker is a very long process, the lead times for moulds are insane and you need so many materials and there are so many possibilities! We"ve created our very own safety buckle mould in Italy so its not just an everyday buckle you can find in a supplier catalogue.6.Did you learn anything?I learned restraint, it would be so easy to launch with an all singing dancing multi fabric / crystal decorated shoe, but I wanted to start with a strong functional sneaker that I can keep tweaking and building.
